Acid Sulfate Soils

Acid Sulfate low res.jpg

Acid Sulfate Soils (ASS) are naturally occurring and are typically found in low-lying wetland areas with shallow water tables. Excavation and dewatering of ASS, if not done properly, can give rise to acidification and associated impacts that can severely contaminate soil and groundwater, and limit land uses. While management processes are conventional, it is important to appropriately characterise and risk assess ASS in order to achieve the most cost-effective and environmentally sound outcome for your project.

Our range of ASS services include:

  • Due diligence investigation for property pre-purchase/preliminary design phase.

  • Site investigations, including testing and interpretation of soil, groundwater and sediments.

  • ASS and groundwater investigation reports to satisfy environmental regulators.

  • Dewatering drawdown and impact modelling.

  • Modelling of soil and dewatering treatment requirements and contracting/treatment costs.

  • Design of dewatering treatment systems for complex and high-risk projects.

  • Preparation of ASS and dewatering management plans.

  • Client-side contractor procurement and audit of contractors.

  • Soil, groundwater and dewatering compliance monitoring and testing during works.

  • Preparation of compliance monitoring and closure reports.

  • Regulator liaison to obtain approvals.
